Gothic direction explored on Sue Rynhart’s Say Pluto
Irish singers top today’s marlbank playlist
Watch Dublin singer Sue Rynhart with Welsh piano legend Huw Warren, known for his work with the great June Tabor and Iain Ballamy in Quercus, in the video above.
Music from Sue’s latest album Say Pluto is introduced to Dublin’s Hugh Lane Gallery on Sunday.
“I was awarded,” says Rynhart, ”an artist residency by Music Network and CCI to embark on the creation of my new album in Paris, at the Centre Culturel Irlandais.”
”During the residency, I developed a deep fascination for Gothic short stories. These narratives became a foundational inspiration for my music, allowing me to explore themes of hauntings, witches, isolation, renewal, and empowerment. I have approached these classic tales with a contemporary twist, weaving in themes of gender, nature, and the art of music.”
Say Pluto includes Rynhart originals and new arrangements of traditional folk songs such as ‘Long Years Ago’ in the video and ‘Lowlands.’
Katharine Timoney TV spot and a new single
Also in the playlist and by stylistic contrast Berts scene singer Katharine Timoney went down, according to reports we gleaned from people who were at the sold out show, a storm at the recent FLive festival in Enniskillen.
And the Amy Winehouse influenced singer whose ‘All This Time’ is new can be heard ion TV this weekend.
Katharine’s spot is part of a gala concert entitled A Century of Stories that marks 100 years of the BBC in Northern Ireland.
It was recorded recently in Belfast’s Waterfront Hall and also featured performances by Clannad, Tony Hadley and ”things can only get better” Derry legend Peter Cunnah of D:Ream. The concert compèred by celebrity daytime TV star presenter Christine Lampard is broadcast on Sunday night.
Focus on Jane Monheit in the marlbank podcast
A focus on Jane Monheit in this week’s podcast
In the marlbank podcast this week the focus is on Jane Monheit.
Its release marks something of a rebirth for the singer whose name the album title borrows.
As we explained in our review run on marlbank last week jazz vocalist Jane Monheit represents something of a rebirth for the singer.
Standouts include ‘On a Clear Day You Can See Forever,’ ‘Green Finch and Linnet Bird’ from Sweeney Todd, and the Disney song ‘In a World of My Own’ from Alice in Wonderland.
Monheit’s versatility in weaving jazz and Broadway styles is one significant part of her signature style. And interaction here with saxist Joel Frahm on ‘In A World Of My Own’ is also a big plus point.
