Travelogue new soon from leader Danny Grissett certainly appeals if you are an Aaron Diehl, Sullivan Fortner or Orrin Evans appreciator.

On this upcoming recording, UK distributor Proper say it’s out on 6 June, he’s with the Glasperian bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Bill Stewart whose own Live at the Village Vanguard recently issued is superb. Vicente goes way back with Grissett to 2005’s Promise.

US pianist Grissett – who turns 50 this year – I know primarily for his work with Jeremy Pelt on such gems as #JiveCulture and I have seen him live a couple of times in London venues.

Los Angeles born Grissett studied at California State University, Cal Arts and the Thelonious Monk Institute. He became a long time member of Tom Harrell’s band and is on such records of the trumpet icon’s as Moving Picture.

Grissett’s own records as a leader go back to 2006 and Promise on Criss Cross followed by Encounters (2007), Form (2008), Stride (2011), and The In-Between (2015) among his already considerable discography.

Archer and Stewart on this upcoming Savant label release were with Grissett on 2017’s Remembrance.

Grissett teaches at Jam Music Lab University in Vienna and was on Weather Report legend Peter Erskine’s delicious Korngold and Steiner movie themed concept album recently issued by Origin, Vienna to Hollywood.

Travelogue is mostly originals of Grissett’s including his piece ‘Spin Cycle’ (there’s an extract above) plus a version of enduring Jimmy Van Heusen 1950s classic ‘Here’s That Rainy Day’ covered in instrumental versions down the years by Oscar Peterson, George Shearing and many others.

There’s also on Travelogue a treatment of Benny Golson evergreen ‘Whisper Not’ introduced to the canon in the 1950s by Lee Morgan and covered by dozens of great jazz artists since.

‘Here’s That Rainy Day’ is streaming.
