Rosario Giuliani Quartet, Logbook: Live At Sounds, Hypnote ****

Hailing from Terracina Rosario Giuliani's golden period was on the French Dreyfus Jazz label and yet he still sounds buzzing. Here at Brussels jazz club Sounds recorded back in late-2023 where he has been playing on and off since the 90s he's with pianist Pietro Lussu - born in Rome in 1971 - who contributes 'MMKK' & 'West and Dance.'

Other pieces are Giuliani's. Lit up bass guitarist Dario Deidda and Russian drummer Sasha Mashin, on our radar on the Benito Gonzalez release Sing to the World, complete the band.

The whole thing begins quite balladically but by the end is rocket fuelled. If you like hard edged bop-derived gutsy alto playing to sweep you along plus the decorous applause and atmosphere of a lived-in jazz room for extra vigour as a bonus to caress the sonics then all your Christmases have arrived at once.
