Track of the week: Caroline Davis, Only the Names Are Changed Part 2, Intakt

Ingeniously written and stylistically like avant hard bop + rap

Thrusting alto sax and punchy syncopated statement with responsive rhythmica.

And then timed just right rap and choral adumbration.

The first part of 'Only the Names Are Changed' comes two tracks earlier.

Led by US saxophonist Caroline Davis this number issued a few weeks ago and one that we have playlisted in the marlbank daily 10 since is drawn from Portals, Volume 2: Returning out in 10 days' time issued by the Swiss label Intakt.

Allan Mednard pushes the band hard

With Davis are trumpeter Marquis Hill, pianist Julian Shore, double bassist Chris Tordini and contributing heavily drummer Allan Mednard who is on Michael Wolff's fine new trio album Memoir, a previous album of the week in these pages.

The rap embedded neatly into the slightly M-BASE like contrapuntal tidal flow is by Nappy Nina. And the way the rhythms unfurl and come over rolling in to flap out around the open ended narrative suggested by the cryptic ''only the names are changed'' in the lyrics - given quite a lot of licence - is as effective as konnakol.
