First of all – we don’t usually comment on cover art as often it doesn’t really enhance the enjoyment of the recording at all or is just plain awful. Not this. The track itself is here
Feast your eyes above on the exquisite cover art of the Dennis González Legacy Band’s Live at the Texas Theatre from which ‘Namesake’ is drawn.
The image is the work of Chicago Underground Duo trumpeter eminence Rob Mazurek who is on the record.
González it needs explaining given the avant Texan trumpeter’s relative obscurity beyond a close-knit cult following died two years ago aged 67.
He recorded approaching three dozen albums including Silkheart label releases Stefan and Namesake (both above) and it’s this new version of the latter’s title track that we focus on. The new version is shorter than the original but shares its buoyant, riff powered looseness and brassy ballsy qualities.
In his later years, González formed the group Yells At Eels with his sons Aaron and Stefan both of whom are here in the band in this fabulously spirited live recording from January. The album is an all González collection of material and its full release is set for 29 November. Astral Spirits say that this is the first in a series of releases from the Legacy Band.
