‘It’s typical every time I seem to slip or fall and hit the wall, and he waltzed in, gave a glimpse of what we might have been now the light is dim’ – from ‘Sobering’

Home Track of the Week: Hetta Falzon’s ‘Sobering’ ****

Torch song ‘Sobering’ from singer Hetta Falzon is track of the week on marlbank this week.

Lyrics explore clarity and reflection and you could interpret this song of intimacy on several non-obvious levels or be literal about them. All make sense.

Observation turns in on itself and becomes personal.

Acceptance. Acknowledgement. A coming to terms with betrayal – it’s all here. And the healing has begun.

‘I’ll just live with the lump in my throat’

Who is Hetta Falzon?

A singer-songwriter in her early 20s from Somerset based we think in Manchester.

She won Glastonbury Festival’s Rum Shack Wild Card Competition at just 18 and performed at the festival in 2023.

The year before she won the Pilton Stage Competition for original unsigned artists worldwide.

‘Sobering’ was co-written with Beau Miles

It’s not a jazz song – more a few chords and the truth. But it is relatable more than most just as any great song can be instantly.

It’s humbling the impact the singer achieves

It’s just vocal and keys here. Check a live version above when Falzon sang the song at the Ritz in Manchester last month complete with rococo introduction which is also pretty special.
