A piano trio recording featuring appealingly understated originals by pianist Sunil López plus a cover of Jerome Kern’s ‘Smoke Gets in Your Eyes’ – a no. 1 for The Platters in 1959 and covered extensively by many artists since.

López, of Spanish and Indian heritage, was born in Switzerland in 1995. He grew up in the Spanish coastal town of Vigo in Galicia. He studied at the Jazzcampus in Basel. This is his debut. Clearly López is heavily influenced by Brad Mehldau like so many.

Recorded in Basel in June 2023 the bassist is the Spaniard Joan Codina and drummer the American, Genius Wesley. It’s OK. Not terribly exciting. Nevertheless the tunes are redeemed by their tendency to thoughtful reverie and the best track is easily ‘Three Shall’ for its quality of darting vivaciousness.
