Start the week

A mellow groove track apart from the anarchic end passage that is from Tortoise. Their first new music since 2016 – that’s a great way to start a Monday.

I’ve only heard the band once at an Islington place called the Garage in 2009 circa Beacons of Ancestorship reviewing the gig for Jazzwise.

But more recently I caught the band’s guitarist Jeff Parker play a solo gig at the Black Box, Belfast in November 2022 reviewing the gig in these pages.

Tortoise erase all genres. They’re not a jazz act but often play highly jazz relatable stuff. Figure that conundrum if you have a spare day at your disposal. Parker’s here with synth player Dan Bitney, bass guitarist Douglas McCombs, percussionist John Herndon and drummer John McEntire.

Check out the video.

Their most recent album was 2016 Thrill Jockey release, The Catastrophist.
