Dave Redmond single ‘Windchill’ streams drawn from All In Motion

L-r: George Colligan, Dave Redmond, Stéphane Mercier, Darren Beckett

Issued on Belgian label Step By Records, ‘Windchill’ introduces All in Motion out on 3 September.

Irish double bassist Dave Redmond, known for his work with Kevin Brady and George Colligan, explains to marlbank that the album “features 10 original compositions, each written with the aim of balancing harmonic depth, rhythmic flexibility, and group interplay.”

“Musically,” Redmond says “‘Windchill’ explores contrasts: space vs density. It opens with a melody that locks into a groove – one that leaves room for texture and conversation between the players.

“The form is deliberately open-ended, encouraging spontaneous development while still anchoring the solo sections with harmonic motion. Jazz is about motion – forward, inward, and outward. This record captures a part of that journey.”

With Redmond are pianist George Colligan, drummer Darren Beckett and alto saxophonist Stéphane Mercier.

2020’s Live in Arklow was a vibrant trio affair featuring Colligan, Redmond and Beckett.

Dave says that “George’s dynamic touch and harmonic inventiveness have been an influence on me for years. Being able to record and perform with him, especially after our Live in Arklow trio record, is something I still don’t take for granted.”

He warms to his theme: “Darren brings a masterful sense of time and flow, always reacting, always listening. Stéphane adds an expressive, lyrical voice that lifts the music into unexpected directions.”

Turning to the compositions the bassist who debuted back in 2013 with the album Roots issued by Barcelona label Fresh Sound New Talent also mentions usefully that the All in Motion pieces “range from angular post-bop to modal ballads and grooves.

“The idea was to let each piece evolve through the musicians rather than over-arrange the material – allowing for risk, nuance, and surprise.”

2021’s Plan B found Redmond with top Irish jazz drummer Kevin Brady, formidable saxophonist Seamus Blake and pianist’s pianist Bill Carrothers.

More broadly and looking to the future he says: “Another full-circle moment has been getting to work with Seamus Blake and Bill Carrothers – two musicians who were equally foundational for me when I was coming up. I’ve been performing with them as part of Kevin Brady’s Electric Quartet, and we’ve just finished recording our second album together.”
