Vincent Meissner, Eigengrau, ACT **1/2

The Vincent Meissner Trio. Photo: publicity

There is a conveyer belt of piano trio albums like this one and in any given year it is easy to locate at least a few dozen high calibre releases that merrily travel along the Eurojazz production lines to eventually squeeze out of numerous digital distribution channels destined for the listening pleasure of punters everywhere from Reykjavik to Rzeszów and beyond.

Born in 2000 – still young in jazz terms but with a growing squad of albums under his belt already – Meissner has won a number of prizes and released two albums so far that share the same personnel as this latest. One is called Wille (2023) that featured a, frankly, very over-the-top cover of ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’; and Bewegtes Feld (2021) which is preferable because it’s less grandiose. The pianist is joined once again by double bassist Josef Zeimetz and drummer Henri Reichmann. But the grandiosity is back as this latest release includes an over the top version of Prince classic ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ and a better choice in ‘Separator’ by Radiohead plus originals of the pianist’s.

The trio live playing happy clappy Meissner tune, ‘Be Yellow.’

I can’t completely give in to loving this record but that said the early tracks here and the Radiohead cover are perfectly pleasant.
