Full Circle Quartet, Same Sky, No label ***

Same Sky is a gentle mood painting affair. And yet there are plenty of involving passages that means it isn’t too floaty. Hailing from the south coast of England, Full Circle Quartet are saxophonist Josephine Davies – the Harper Trio player who was named Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year at the 2019 Parliamentary Jazz Awards – pianist Joss Peach – a co-composer of kids TV song Tee and Mo’s ‘Help Our Little World’ – bassist-leader Terry Pack once of The Enid (“Thunderbags” was on the progsters’ remarkable Airy Fairy Nonsense) and completing the line-up, drummer Angus Bishop.

They already have albums like The South Downs Suite and Open Water to their name. And they stick with their established approach it seems clear. It’s a pastoral vision featuring tunes of the band lovingly strung together that never prove too taxing but aren’t at all bland.

Mindful, evocative, the soloing from Davies is very strong indeed and proves this largely appealing album’s lodestar.
