BBE Music are issuing a previously unreleased archive recording featuring vocalist Norma Winstone later this summer. Gilles Peterson Presents Norma Winstone Live at Maida Vale captures a five-track live performance from the BBC’s Maida Vale studio complex. The LP anticipates a wider compilation, BBC Sessions Vol. 2 – Maida Vale: The End of an Era.
The session features Winstone leading an ensemble of established UK scene jazz musicians. The lineup includes her sons Leo Taylor on drums and Alex Taylor on vocals, alongside tuba player Oren Marshall, best known for his work in early period Sons of Kemet, pianist Elliot Galvin, and saxophonist Mark Lockheart who was brilliant with Norma on the Dave Holland album of Wheeleriana, Spark of Life. The performance covers key compositions from across Winstone’s fifty-year career, specifically ‘Edge Of Time,’ ‘Azimuth,’ ‘The Tunnel,’ a composition that has been sampled by Canadian rapper Drake, ‘Sirens’ Song,’ and ‘2081.’
DJ Gilles Peterson curated the release from his archive of BBC session recordings. What’s available so far is ethereally electronica and quite sci-fi in nature given the mystery inherent in the probing experimental nature of the wordless lyrics and modernistic keyboard accompaniment from Galvin interspered by Wayne Shorter-like soprano saxophone contribution from Lockheart. Look for the full release in August.
