Serenely Stakhanovite on Tomasz Stańko classic Dark Eyes, Stańko (1942-2018) demonstrated an affinity with top Finns like Tuomarila during his long career. TS recruited the pianist, now 52, who hails from Pori when he was an unknown. I knew Stańko a bit and interviewed him a number of times. Tomek told me that he heard about the quality of Tuomarila for the first time by reading an article written by jazz writer Stuart Nicholson and went ahead to recruit the Finn for Dark Eyes (ECM, 2009). Earlier in his career the great trumpeter was close to another brilliant Finn the talismanic free-jazz drummer Edward Vesala (1945-99) who was like a brother from another mother such was their rapport especially on the classic Balladyna which is to be reissued on vinyl this month. Read what ECM have to say about it here.
