LOX
Steel pan flavours, driving guitar. All roads lead to LOX, a new act to discover in 2025

One to watch in 2025

Unusual this latest jazz single of the week on marlbank and new from drummer LOX and a jazz-rock steel pan flavoured piece from this new act that London label Jazz Re:freshed are getting behind.

It’s a seven-minute plus number that has picked up some 10,000 streams on Spotify since release recently – not too shabby at all for complete unknowns when most new jazz acts can only hope to pick up a trickle.

Steel pan flavoured

Think Yussef Dayes meets Dennis Chambers in terms of the drummer leader’s bustling heavy hitter approach here.

There’s a driving 1980s-like guitar melody played by Ben Glasser who is quite Mike Stern-like in approach on this uptempo starter that shifts a bit from The 8 Gates to be released in 2025.

Ninja inspired

Lox is inspired by the graphic art Anime style and in particular the exploits of legendary ninja saga Naruto – a long running epic written by mangaka Masashi Kishimoto that began in the late-1990s.

Trinidadian player Leon Foster Thomas contributes a lot here and solos after the main bustle of the main theme.

The twist is its development when the piece pivots to be more ballad-like after a couple of minutes.
