Track choice: Lizz Wright and Kenny Banks Sr – Amazing Grace

Lizz Wright and Kenny Banks Sr | marlbank article

The second time a track from Nearness lands in the track of the week spot. It is also top track of 2026 I reckon. To the tune of ‘New Britain’ from 1835 when it was so paired by William Walker in The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, the words of this for the ages John Newton hymn go further back to the Eighteenth Century. It’s a remarkable performance vocally by the great jazz and gospel influenced American singer Wright, who first burst on to a wider consciousness with Salt more than 20 years ago. The daughter of a church minister herself, this musical pairing with the authoritative pianist Banks Sr of the Cascade United Methodist Church, Atlanta – down there in Lizz’s home state of Georgia – makes perfect sense and pays artistic dividends over and over again the more you listen

When we’ve been over there, over there, for ten thousand, for ten thousand, years
Bright shining, bright shining, as, shining like the sun
Hey, We will have no, we will have no, less days to sing, sing the Lord’s sweet praise
Than when we’ve first begun

Part of The way Lizz sings John Newton’s words adding bits of repetition for effect With Further Wonderful Elaboration in the Coda that’s Like a Vocal Cadenza in Miniature that Gives Way Naturally to Banks’ sturdy timing and authority inconspicuously but crucially Enough as you’ll Hear when listening to Tiny Segments again of the Treatment as Will Probably be inevitable as You begin to Live with the riches of the treatment.

Soon I Will Be Done is an earlier track of the week on marlbank

More on Nearness from which both tracks are drawn

Nearness (Blues & Greens/Candid, 25 September) moves between spirituals and standards – including ‘All The Things You Are’, ‘Deep River’ and the title track – framed by a stripped-back approach that places voice and piano/organ interplay at the centre. In contrast to the fuller arrangements of Shadow (2024), the focus here is on clarity and restraint.

More from marlbank. It only begins when you listen

Wednesday thoughts

Dear regular reader, It would be so nice to hear from you. And as ever thanks for reading. It's not clicks for kicks we're in it for. I'm just deadly serious about trying to make marlbank the best jazz site that I possibly can, putting in the time, fixing it up as I go along.

And if new to the site this is what we do and would like do in a nutshell.

In the words of my favourite ludicrously genius level daytime rubbish TV ad shoehorned in between the ads for crematoria and pet food it's "No drugs, no rubs, no drama" round here. On a basic level look us up each day and you will find a post.

That might be an album review, listings, a podcast, news item, playlist, live report. It's not a case at all of you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours in terms of coverage. Forget chumocracy and cronyism, reader you won't be sold a pup. We're not selling anything - that's why. Woof and all.

The site is free. I wanna be your dog. Erm not quite. But hey any old excuse to listen to Iggy Pop. Jazzers ain't got much bread so free is good. It's only a blog anyway - cheaper than chips perhaps to you guv up there with the folks on the hill. It is what it is to me and I love it. So what.

There isn't a team or anything. It's one just one person trying to make a difference.

No one is trying to sell you anything. The site tries to be as transparent as possible.

I'd like it to grow. Maybe it can. More of everything. More rapport with you - dear readers - more contributors. Let's hope.

Our social media drug of choice at the moment is Instagram. See you there, at a gig somewhere or on the phone - the number is +44 07961672318. All I'd ask is please don't pester me all the time about reviewing records. I do that anyway. Collaboration is a two way street, work with us but please don't use us as a dart board or see us as a marketing tool or client journalism. That's not what the site is about. It's demoralising and a waste of your time as much as ours. Speak to me instead, come up up with a daft plan to achieve world domination, run away with the circus together, go mad in Dorset, make Lego figures of my favourite virtuoso of the comb and paper, spray his visage on to a nearby gable end, whatever - you know it somehow makes a lorra, lorra, sense. SG
