Clockwise from top left: Gonzalo Teppa - double bass; Walter Gorra - piano; Andy Wheelock - drums; Gilad Hekselman, guitar

Made up largely of originals by drummer Andy Wheelock it’s the top lines guitar playing of Gilad Hekselman that makes this record the dynamic and spirited release it is.

The overall sound is reminiscent of Gilfema, Lionel Loueke with Massimo Biolcati and Ferenc Nemeth.

John Patitucci sense of buoyancy…

Footage from this year’s University of Wyoming Jazz Festival, l-r: Walter Gorra – piano; Gilad Hekselman – guitar; Gonzalo Teppa – double bass; Andy Wheelock – drums

… and a Gilfema-like poise

Bassist Gonzalo Teppa who contributes the tune ‘Well Luck Indeed’ provides a John Patitucci sense of buoyancy and the tunes contain a vibrant AfroLatin feel.

Wheelock was terrific with Steve Nelson on the Live Edge Trio’s Closing Time released earlier this year also issued by Seattle indie Origin/OA2 and this appeals not quite as much but close enough.
