The Saturday Morning Lili Listen: Tom Bourgeois ‘Thèmes et variations #1’ (Igloo/BMC)

Love this, new on the go ahead Brussels label Igloo, also to be jointly issued by the highly aesthetic Budapest indie BMC.

It’s from saxophonist, composer, bass clarinettist Tom Bourgeois and his quartet. Alex Koo on piano features notably. His Blame It On My Chromosomes is one of the year’s best releases and touch here is just right.

Themed around and inspired by the work of the classical composer Lili Boulanger (1893-1918) this rendering from Lili has a jazzy swung triplet feel, evocative Debussy-esque cadential peace to it and clear bass lines. It is much faster than the stately tempo of the source and is a leap away idiomatically and yet is incredibly respectful. Album guests are singer Veronika Harcsa and cellist Vincent Courtois.
