Godtet, + the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, La Sape

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Definitely need to know for your radar.

On one level it’s crossover classical. On another it isn’t. Because It’s unclassifiable. Calling it electronica feels weird too. Recorded at the Sydney Opera House last year the orchestra conducted by Nicolas Buc stick to the written notes. The Godtet don’t. They weave in and out in the established method of the improvisers that they are.

The collaboration expands on the Oz outfit’s earlier Godtet + Strings project, which they also performed with a string quartet in 2022. Clearly the Godtet arranger & orchestrator Novak Manojlovic is a bit of creative powerhouse.

What’s in store even in such a formal setting with a classical orchestra in tow isn’t a case of what prompted John Lennon to mischievously ask a Royal Variety Performance audience in 1963: “Would the people in the cheaper seats clap your hands? And the rest of you, if you’ll just rattle your jewellery.” Staid this is not.
