The recipe factors in neo-soul, alt-soul, and broken beat rhythms but it’s easily relatable to if a jazz listener although purists won’t really be interested.
There aren’t any knock out songs. If you are into Sade then this may appeal. But May isn’t in the same league at all.
It’s quite political in places in the lyrics. But the soft stylings don’t make it a raw or strident album. ‘What We Do’ is a bit dancier and more in that direction would make this a more enjoyable album. I think there are too many producers involved. These include Alfa Mist, Beat Butcha, LVTHER, Melo Zed, TAVE and Tom Excell.
Singer, songwriter and guitarist Ego Ella May (real name Nicole May) hails from Croydon of Nigerian parents, the “Ego” in her name is a nod to her Igbo roots, the “Ella” a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. Her career got off to a flying start winning a jazz act MOBO for Honey For Wounds.
