The five-track project is Collier’s latest release as a bandleader, composer and multi-instrumentalist.
The EP explores themes of resilience, connection and personal transformation. Across the record, Collier presents joy as a response to periods of uncertainty and change, drawing on experiences of grief, artistic growth and community.
“We are in a paradoxical time, where so much is being revealed to us,” Collier said. “Everything feels political from every scope… our collective hearts feel the heaviness in the air. Yet I say to you all—don’t despair. For right now, the most political thing we can do is share joy.”
The title track began as a composition written during a period when people close to Collier were experiencing loss and major life changes. The recording features an 11-piece ensemble with horn and string sections, with Collier contributing vocals, piano and tenor saxophone.
Elsewhere on the EP, ‘Landscape of Dreams’ was recorded largely solo after musicians were delayed travelling to the studio. Collier performed layered flute, drums, Mellotron, Wurlitzer and percussion parts himself.
‘Where I’m Loved’ moves towards an R&B-influenced sound, combining vocals, Wurlitzer and guitar. “When the Dust Settles” incorporates synthesisers and improvised collaboration with guitarist Cole Runge and drummer Jeremiah Collier Isaiah’s own brother. Closing track ‘God’s By Your Side’ draws influence from D’Angelo and reflects on perseverance and artistic legacy.
Alongside the release of Joy, Collier is continuing his “Collier Plays Coltrane” tour throughout 2026, marking the centenary of John Coltrane. The programme reinterprets Coltrane’s catalogue through live improvisation and contemporary arrangements.
