Formidable this from drummer Cindy Blackman Santana’s upcoming Coherence. The full album includes guest spots by her husband latin jazz rock icon Carlos Santana and, from the Bitches Brew era, English Milesian jazz-rock icon John McLaughlin – the Mahavishnu to Carlos’ Devadip back in their Sri Chinmoy days.
The head motif of ‘Illumination’ makes me think of Hoyt Curtin’s theme music for 1960s Hanna-Barbera cartoon series ‘Meet The Flintstones‘ a subliminal smidge before peeling off to soar into jazz-rock heaven that takes the sound out. Released on 31 July, Cindy’s powerhouse drumming on Coherence is backed by a stellar core band featuring Aurelien Budynek on guitar, Felix [son of Jaco] Pastorius on bass, Emilio Modeste on saxophone, and Zaccai Curtis on keyboards.
