It’s a boost for the small Northern Ireland jazz scene the news tonight that the Belfast born jazz trumpeter Dr Linley Hamilton has been awarded an MBE in the King’s New Year Honours list for services to the music industry in Northern Ireland.

Linley who co-runs Magy’s Farm in the Dromara Hills, hosted a weekly BBC Radio Ulster jazz show for many years and the 59-year-old is also a music lecturer at the University of Ulster.

A long time tutor at the summertime Sligo Jazz Project Dr Hamilton has released records such as 2023’s Ginger’s Hollow with his Anglo-American band featuring drummer Adam Nussbaum and Pat Metheny Group legend bass guitarist Mark Egan.

‘An honour not just for me, but also for anybody I’ve worked with’

He told PA Media: ”I am very, very grateful because I know these things happen because people have put you forward because they think you have made a difference to their careers and lives… It is an honour not just for me, but also for anybody I’ve worked with and people that I still mentor now.”
