Tanhai Collective are: Billy Hare – keys; Walter Feeney – trumpet; Tom McCann – saxophone; Louis Hudd – guitar; Ben Harper – drums; Sravudh Tanhai – bass.  ‘Kind of New’ was written and produced by Billy Hare / Tanhai Collective. The track was recorded by Wes Burton at Fish Factory, London. It was mixed by Jimmy Robertson at Snafu Studios and mastered by Nick Robbins at Sound Mastering.

In our playlist today ‘Kind of New’ just released by rising stars the Tanhai Collective is a standout track from this exciting new UK jazz-funk outfit. The band’s keyboardist Billy Hare in this special guest blog for marlbank explains some of the background:

“‘Kind of New’ is probably one of the band’s earliest tunes. Written in the first stages of us finding our ‘sound’ at rehearsals, the tune has been in our repertoire since our first few gigs. Although being one of our most consistent setlist songs – it took a really long time until we felt like we could do the track justice in a recorded studio context from all levels of an arrangement, production, engineering and mixing standpoint. After releasing 2 records, we felt like we got into a place  with studio recording and production to make the track how we imagined. Shout out Jimmy Robertson for mixing and Wes and the assistants at Fish Factory too!”

“The song captures our strongest influences that have stuck with us since the beginning – soulful and melodic jazz funk from the 70s. For me personally, Donald Byrd, Freddie Hubbard and that whole 70s Blue Note scene were the first jazz musicians that really ticked all the boxes I was looking for in jazz music – melodic, masterfuly played, dancey and deep in a groove. There is also some lo/fi analogue-ness or intimacy in those albums which really spoke to me and is sometimes missing in the more polished productions from Herbie’s Headhunters era or Weather Report etc.”

“The tune itself is very groove forward, Ben’s performance on the drums is great, him and  Salahud on bass seriously lock into the groove. The two horns have this massive sound and the light touches of percussion really add a bit more movement to the track. The guitar complements the track really tastefully and I’m really happy how the keys solo came out – I believe this whole tune was the 2nd take! Being able to lay the track down in 2 takes shows the whole song and vibe feels like home to us, I’d like to hope that’s something listeners can pick up from it!”
